Located in rural Lama, Roots and Wings Community School is a privately-run, publicly-funded charter school for grades 5-8. The existing campus consists of a 1,500gsf modular building in the traditional Territorial style with exterior portals and flagstone walkways. Living Designs Group has guided Roots and Wings through the rigorous planning and zoning approval process of Taos County's Special Use Permit procedure to allow for the campus expansion. The expansion comprises an increased parking capacity that does not disturb the native vegetation and the design of a 2,650gsf freestanding addition which has allowed Roots and Wings to double the number of middle school students it serves. The addition fits harmoniously with the the existing building, matching the roof profile, massing and exterior materials. Completed in the spring of 2009, students and staff now enjoy an exterior courtyard framed by the small "village" of freestanding structures
